Elephant Jokes [LP] $16.98 Has Robert Pollard been reading his reviews lately? The back cover of 2009's Elephant Jokes, the fifth album Pollard released that year, features the blurb "Another big batch of Robert Pollard songs, a new nadir in patience and delicacy," suggesting he's become aware of the not-uncommon complaint that he's more interested in quantity than quality. But truth to tell, Pollard's joke has been attached to the wrong record: Elephant Jokes sounds more like a Guided by Voices album than anything Pollard has done in quite a while, which is to say the tunes are short, energetic, and hooky as all get-out and he dives into them with a full head of steam. The album was cut using Pollard's now standard working method -- Bob singing and playing guitar; Todd Tobias recording, producing, and handling the rest of the instruments -- but the results suggest Pollard put a bit more thought into his guitar playing, with a larger portion of joyously aggressive slop making its way into the final mix than listeners have come to expect, and though Elephant Jokes still doesn't perfectly replicate the sound of the members of a full band bouncing ideas off one another in the studio, it comes much closer than most of his post-GbV work. And as for the songs, Elephant Jokes is just consistent enough that perhaps Pollard actually threw away a few less than worthwhile tunes for a change; the wordplay is thoroughly cryptic, as usual, but there's actually some sort of point to "Things Have Changed (Down in Mexico City)" and "Hippsville (Where the Frisbees Fly Forever)," and the primitivism of "Jimmy" and "Symbols and Heads" is enough to make you think the man has rediscovered his four-track cassette machine, and likes it. Sure, Elephant Jokes is another big batch of Robert Pollard songs, but it harks back to a time when most smart pop fans could hardly ask for anything more. ~ Mark Deming |

Eggs Are Funny $22.99 Here go Mew again, with a characteristically ineffable album cover and a suitably absurdist title to accompany it. One might think it was the latest piece of studio wizardry from the brilliantly off-kilter Danish group, but it is, in fact, ostensibly a best-of collection. It's hard to say what the impetus is for a band like Mew -- whose albums are each so uniformly crafted as a whole -- to come out with a set like this, but as it turns out, it's not entirely unwarranted. After all, the band had a three-album run before they released the more widely heard And the Glass Handed Kites, and it's reasonable to believe the casual fan would not have heard a lot of their earlier material. This gives Mew a tough decision to make: do they objectively release a best of-collection that features their best work, weighted heavily toward their two most recent records, or do they focus upon the lesser-known material? As it turns out, Eggs is a bit of both: they prominently feature their most recent and probably overall strongest record No More Stories alongside some stronger cuts from their earlier years ("Wheels Over Me," "156"). Of course, given Mew's nature, the track list and sequencing decisions are really going to make or break such a collection, and luckily the set features a perfect choice of opener in "Am I Wry? No," a band favorite that's bounced around on singles, EPs,and two of those early records. In eschewing chronological organization and extricating the songs from their former connectedness, Eggs Are Funny sounds a bit disorienting, but for those thoroughly familiar with their recent output, it's a pleasant surprise to hear the band's formative moments erratically sprinkled in along with the requisite new track ("Do You Love It?"). It's also nice to get a version of the band's signature "The Zookeeper's Boy" in mixtape-ready form, with an extended intro in place of the previously disjointed track cut. It's been pointed out before that Mew can sound like a bizarrely skewed transmission from the overly emotive years of '90s rock radio, nowhere more true than on the almost enjoyably maudlin "She Came Home for Christmas" from the band's 1997 debut. More often, Mew have been labeled "prog" due to their wide-ranging atmospheric tendencies and penchant for elaborate song structures, but there's a disarmingly intimate tenderness to the band's toweringly complex melodies that transcends categorization. Instead of putting an over-emphasis on technicality, or the distance that their at times glacial sonic tone might outwardly summon, those elements are merely part of the overall construct that also features a whole lot of potent emotion. While huge in Europe, Mew enjoy a more tenuous appreciation in the U.S., where their mysterious, ethereal quality keeps them well out of the mainstream. It's hard to imagine this set as anything more than reinforcement for fans already on board, but a justification for the existence of Eggs Are Funny may be that it serves as |

Although she is a tremendously famous Broadway star, she has suffered from the stock market crash and needs to boost her finances. Even Ziegfeld, who soon will pass away, is having a hard time raising money for a show. Into this scene bursts brash young Billy Rose (James Caan), an egotistical lyricist with unrestrained ambition. He cajoles and charms Fanny into linking up with him, convincing him that he can produce a revue that will showcase her to their mutual advantage. Out of town, the show is an unmitigated disaster, and Fanny uses her professional know-how to whip the show into shape. It arrives in New York a hit -- and Fanny and Billy arrive an item. Both of their careers blossom, but even though they marry, their relationship suffers. Fanny still carries a torch for first husband Nick (Omar Sharif), and Billy, partially because of insecurities caused by Fanny's feelings for Nick, has a roving eye. Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening [LP] [PA] $13.98 If you're unfamiliar with the standup of the wicked funny actor/comedian Aziz Ansari, imagine a Mitch Hedberg tape sped up three ticks and then add an extra helping of snide to the routine, along with Internet-age nerdiness and some deviant ideas that are absolutely unquotable in mixed company. Here's hoping no one misses the irony of the album's title, because Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening stacks the rape jokes high, but Aziz's act is, fortunately, much more than filthy. "Harassing Harris on Facebook" wouldn't be nearly as funny if it weren't for the man's keen ability to put the listener in a paranoid preteen mindset while the insults thrown at MTV are razor-sharp, skewering the contestants of Aziz's most hated show, Next. Hipsters, social network addicts, and those who practice shroomery will get the most out of the man's thoroughly modern set, but you only need a passing knowledge of Kanye West and R. Kelly to belly laugh at the outstanding fourth quarter. Anyone who appreciates observational humor at breakneck speed must hear the comedian's re-creation of an R. Kelly club appearance, and if that weren't enough, Aziz's over the top "RAAAAAAAANDY" character from the film Funny People provides the encore, which brings down the house. Providing every reason why Kanye West and Judd Apatow are both big fans, this is a fantastic, uproarious debut. ~ David Jeffries |

Vampire Happening - B&W $5.99 Italian producer Pier A. Caminnecci went to Germany and hired British director Freddie Francis to make this vampire comedy starring his Scandinavian wife, Pia Dagermark (Elvira Madigan). The resultant international mish-mash is neither very scary nor very funny. Dagermark portrays Hollywood actress Betty Williams, who inherits a Balkan castle only to find that her grandmother (also played by Dagermark) was a vampiric witch. There is a great deal of nudity, bad jokes, cheesy visuals, and Ferdy Mayne -- star of this film's superior inspiration, Dance of the Vampires -- as a helicopter-riding Dracula. Funny Money - $12.99 Leslie Greif directs this adaptation of Ray Cooney's hit British play, a throwback farce about mistaken identity. Chevy Chase plays Henry Perkins, a listless late-middle-aged executive in a wax fruit company; his wife, Carol (Penelope Ann Miller), is similarly bored, a struggling sculptor and housewife in Hoboken, NJ. On his way home from work to a surprise birthday party Carol is throwing, he accidentally switches briefcases with a Russian mobster. He opens the suitcase at a local bar and discovers five million dollars inside. He rushes home and tries to arrange a flight to Barcelona for Carol and him so they can take the money and run. Detective Sergeant Genero (Armand Assante) shows up later; he saw Henry at the bar and is suspicious of his actions. That Funny Feeling - $12.99 In this romantic comedy, an aspiring actress pays her bills by working as a maid for various households. One of her employers is a wealthy and prominent publisher. After accidentally running into each other a number of times on the New York streets without recognizing each other, they begin to fall in love.
